Job Description Gastrointestinal (GI) Specialist /
Gastroenterologist Position Summary The Gastrointestinal (GI)
Specialist is a physician responsible for the evaluation,
diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders of the digestive
tract and hepatobiliary system, including the esophagus, stomach,
small intestine, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, and gallbladder.
The physician provides consultative care in outpatient and/or
inpatient settings and performs diagnostic and therapeutic
endoscopic procedures. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Evaluate and manage patients with acute and chronic
gastrointestinal conditions Obtain medical histories, perform
physical examinations, and develop differential diagnoses Order and
interpret laboratory studies, imaging, and pathology reports
Perform endoscopic procedures (e.g., upper endoscopy and
colonoscopy) Diagnose and treat GI bleeding, inflammatory
disorders, functional disorders, and liver disease Provide
colorectal cancer screening and surveillance Develop treatment
plans including medications, nutrition, and procedural
interventions Provide inpatient consultation and coordinate care
with hospitalists, surgeons, and primary care providers Educate
patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and
preventive care Document clinical encounters in the electronic
medical record Participate in quality improvement and peer review
activities Procedural Scope (Typical) Esophagogastroduodenoscopy
(EGD) Colonoscopy with biopsy and polypectomy Control of
gastrointestinal bleeding Dilation of strictures PEG tube placement
Foreign body removal Advanced procedures based on privileges
(optional): ERCP, endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) Conditions Commonly
Managed Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Peptic ulcer disease
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s
disease, ulcerative colitis) Gastrointestinal bleeding Dysphagia
Liver diseases including hepatitis and fatty liver disease
Pancreatic and biliary disorders Colon polyps and colorectal cancer
screening Practice Settings Outpatient clinic Endoscopy suite or
ambulatory surgery center Hospital inpatient consult service
Possible call coverage depending on staffing model Qualifications
Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
Completion of accredited Internal Medicine residency Completion of
accredited Gastroenterology fellowship Board Certified or Board
Eligible in Gastroenterology Eligible for unrestricted state
medical license DEA certification (if prescribing controlled
medications) Core Competencies Endoscopic procedural proficiency
Clinical judgment and diagnostic reasoning Patient communication
and education Multidisciplinary collaboration Ability to manage
urgent and high-acuity presentations Work Environment Combination
of clinic, procedural, and hospital settings Exposure to moderate
procedural workload Team-based care model with nursing and
ancillary staff support
